The Morning Show host Larry Emdur has confessed to making an embarrassing Matildas blunder during the bronze medal play-off at the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Saturday.

Speaking live on air, Larry admitted that he was supporting “the wrong team” for 50 minutes of the game between Australia and Sweden – leading him to be “in trouble” with co-host Kylie Gillies.

The host said he made the error after arriving home to watch the telecast late, and assumed that the Matildas were wearing yellow jerseys for the game.

“I’m in trouble with my sports-loving co-host because I came in late on the Matildas game,” he explained.

“I came in late, it was on. And my wife, my father-in-law and I were sitting there watching – I was busy hosting The Chase and I came in late.

“I sat down, right, with a glass of wine and I saw all the yellow jerseys running up and down and was like ‘Go girls! Wow, while they’re really putting the pressure on the Swedes, aren’t they?

“Turns out, 50 minutes later, it wasn’t the Australians!”

Kylie said she was stunned that Larry didn’t realise the Matildas wore two different coloured jerseys – yellow and aqua blue – during their World Cup games.

“I’ve just spent like 10 minutes explaining it to you, that Sweden are yellow and blue and we had the alternate strip,” she said.

“You didn’t feel like telling me that before?” Larry challenged.

He added: “Anyway, I thought we were going great?”

The popular host went on to admit it was only when he saw Mary Fowler’s name on an aqua jersey that he realised his error.

“I saw Fowler on a blue jersey and I thought ‘What the hell is going on here? Have they got a Fowler as well?” Larry said.

Kylie said the incident was reminiscent of politician Barnaby Joyce’s World Cup stuff-up, which saw him watch an old Matildas game without realising.

“Barnaby Joyce, we’re calling you,” Kylie said. “From when he mucked up the whole viewing earlier in the tournament.”

Larry responded: “Barnaby Joyce is the nicest thing you’ve ever called me!”
